Good Tidings of Great Joy

Isaiah wrote a jubilant prophecy in the form of a command:

O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God!

Isaiah 40:9

The people of God, referred to here as Zion or Jerusalem, have good news to share, and the prophet urges them to share it with exuberance. Go to a high place, where you can be seen and heard. Shout the news loudly, so no one missed it. What is this good news? “Behold your God!” In other words, God has become accessible to you; find Him!

Isaiah later couches this same message in the form of a celebration of the messenger:

How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!

Isaiah 52:7

When the priests of King Noah asked the prophet Abinadi to explain this passage (Mosiah 12:20-21), he applied it to people of many generations: prior prophets, living prophets, future prophets, and ultimately, “the founder of peace,” Jesus Christ. (See Mosiah 15:13-18.)

The Savior also quoted this verse as He prophesied about the gathering of Israel in our day. (See 3 Nephi 20:40.)

The angel who appeared to a group of shepherds in Bethlehem on the day Jesus was born told them not to be afraid,

for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

Luke 2:10-11

The good tidings are that the Creator of the world came to earth and lived as one of us. The good tidings are that He has the power to heal every wound and to help us overcome every obstacle we face. The good news is that we will find Him if we seek Him with all our hearts. (See Jeremiah 29:13, Omni 1:26.)

After the shepherds saw the baby Jesus, they “made known abroad” what the angel had told them about Him. Their enthusiasm was contagious: “All they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds” (Luke 2:17-18).

Today, I will share good tidings with great joy. I will enthusiastically testify of truths which can strengthen the faith and hope of the people around me and help them grow closer to God.
