Who Can Stand?

The Jaredites were terrified of a military leader named Shiz. They cried in despair, “Who can stand before the army of Shiz? Behold, he sweepeth the earth before him!” (Ether 14:18).

Thousands of years earlier, on another continent, God warned the children of Israel against making those kinds of hopeless exclamations:

Hear, O Israel: Thou art to pass over Jordan this day, to go in to possess nations greater and mightier than thyself, cities great and fenced up to heaven,

A people great and tall, the children of the Anakims, whom thou knowest, and of whom thou hast heard say, Who can stand before the children of Anak!

Understand therefore this day, that the Lord thy God is he which goeth over before thee; as a consuming fire he shall destroy them, and he shall bring them down before thy face.

Deuteronomy 9:1-3

So the next time you are tempted to think that someone is invincible, that there is no way to stop them from dominating and attacking you, think about whom you have for an ally. With God on your side, you will be able to overcome every challenge you face, however daunting it may appear. Don’t let your trust in Him be quenched by fear.

Today, I will trust God to help me face every challenge. Instead of expressing despair or resignation, I will move forward in faith, believing that God will go before me and prepare the way for my success.
