Valiant and True

Mormon describes the 2,000 stripling warriors who followed Helaman in these words:

They were exceedingly valiant for courage, and also for strength and activity; but behold, this was not all—they were men who were true at all times in whatsoever thing they were entrusted.

Yea, they were men of truth and soberness, for they had been taught to keep the commandments of God and to walk uprightly before him.

Alma 53:20-21, emphasis added

Notice the complimentary virtues:

  1. Valiant – willing to act in the face of danger or fear
  2. True – reliable, dependable, conscientious in fulfilling their duty

Valiance without truth would result in reckless behavior. Truth without valiance would produce good plans but inadequate results. It was the combination of those two qualities which generated a powerful military force, capable of defending their country against a formidable enemy.

Today, I will be valiant and true. I will act with boldness as I fulfill my responsibilities and keep God’s commandments.
