Service, Joy, and the Love of God

After reviewing with his people how he had served them, King Benjamin clarified that he wasn’t telling them these things to boast. In serving them, he explained, he was only serving God. Then, he taught them the same principle which the Savior would later teach in the parable of the sheep and the goats:

  • Benjamin: “When ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God” (Mosiah 2:17).
  • Jesus: “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me” (Matthew 25:40).

Two speakers in our most recent general conference referenced King Benjamin’s principle. Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf listed a number of seemingly small things that we can do for others, such as praying for them, giving a sincere compliment, or listening. Then he assured us, “‘When ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God,’ and God will repay your kindness generously. The joy you give to others will return to you in ‘good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over.'” (“A Higher Joy,” General Conference, April 2024).

Elder Alexander Dushku listed a number of activities that can invite “rays of light” into our lives. He said, “You may have felt the love of God for others as you served them” (“Pillars and Rays,” General Conference, April 2024).

Today, I will find simple ways to serve the people around me. I will remember that, in serving them, I am showing my love for God. I will also remember that serving others can bring me joy and help me feel the love of God.
