“I Will Give You Rest”

Jesus invited everyone who feels tired or overburdened to come unto Him, and He promised, “I will give you rest.” He encouraged us to take His yoke upon us and learn of Him, with the promise, “Ye shall find rest unto your souls” (Matthew 11:28-30).

Alma similarly encouraged his son Helaman to teach the people “never to be weary of good works, but to be meek and lowly in heart; for such shall find rest to their souls” (Alma 37:34).

Sometimes the very things which seem on the surface to make our lives harder are actually lightening our burdens. President Russell M. Nelson taught:

Dear brothers and sisters, I grieve for those who leave the Church because they feel membership requires too much of them. They have not yet discovered that making and keeping covenants actually makes life easier!…

The reward for keeping covenants with God is heavenly power—power that strengthens us to withstand our trials, temptations, and heartaches better. This power eases our way. Those who live the higher laws of Jesus Christ have access to His higher power. Thus, covenant keepers are entitled to a special kind of rest that comes to them through their covenantal relationship with God.

Today, I will be grateful for the enabling power which comes into my life as I fulfill my covenants with God. I will remember that the “yoke” He invites me to carry and the good works which He invites me to perform actually make me stronger and enable my soul to rest.
