5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord;
6 And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.
The temple strengthens families for several reasons. One reason is because the sealing ordinance is performed there, which binds families together eternally. Another reason is given in the passage above: because temple work is so closely linked with family history work.
When we serve our deceased ancestors, our love for our family increases. Our thoughts and feelings are naturally turned to family, and our love for and loyalty to family members grows. As a result, we are more inclined to invest in our relationships with them and to serve them.
I’m grateful for the increased focus on family that comes through participation in temple ordinances. Today, I will ponder how my own heart has turned to family members as I have participated in family history and temple work.
