In a Lost and in a Fallen State – 1 Nephi 10:6

6 Wherefore, all mankind were in a lost and in a fallen state, and ever would be save they should rely on this Redeemer.

This week, I’m going to study the doctrine of the Fall and its effects on us. One thing I’d like to ponder is what the prophets of the Book of Mormon called “the natural man.” I’d like to become more self-aware through this process–learning to recognize the attributes of the natural man in my own thoughts, feelings, and actions, so that I can seek the Lord’s help in overcoming them.
As Lehi taught his sons in the passage above, because of the Fall, we are all in a “lost and…fallen state” and will be forever unless we trust the Savior to help us overcome it. To be “lost” implies to me that we are incapable of finding our way home without His guidance. To be “fallen” suggests that we have committed sins which have distanced us from our Heavenly Father, and that we have a proclivity to do some things that are not right.
Today, I will remember that it is essential for me to rely on our Redeemer, who has the ability to lift us out of our lost and fallen state. As I have the opportunity to partake of the sacrament, I will seek His guidance and His power to help me overcome my sins and weaknesses so that I might eventually realize my divine potential.
