Costly Apparel – 4 Nephi 1:24-25

24 And now, in this two hundred and first year there began to be among them those who were lifted up in pride, such as the wearing of costly apparel, and all manner of fine pearls, and of the fine things of the world.
25 And from that time forth they did have their goods and their substance no more common among them.
Mormon gives “costly apparel” as an example of the pride that began to creep in among the Nephites. Is it wrong to wear expensive clothing?
The phrase “costly apparel” appears eight times in the Book of Mormon, always in a negative light. The first appearance is in Alma 1, when Nehor began to preach false doctrine. He became so popular that people began to give him money, and “he began to be lifted up in the pride of his heart, and to wear very costly apparel” (Alma 1:6). Later in that same chapter, Mormon describes the humble members of the church in these words:

And they did impart of their substance, every man according to that which he had, to the poor, and the needy, and the sick, and the afflicted; and they did not wear costly apparel, yet they were neat and comely (Alma 1:27).

Clearly the Lord cares what we wear. The righteous avoid ostentatious styles and fashions, but they are not sloppy or careless in their choice of clothing. As President Thomas S. Monson has reminded us:

Servants of the Lord have always counseled us to dress appropriately to show respect for our Heavenly Father and for ourselves. The way you dress sends messages about yourself to others and often influences the way you and others act. Dress in such a way as to bring out the best in yourself and those around you (“Preparation Brings Blessings,” General Conference, April 2010).

John H. Groberg wrote an article about clothing choices which appeared in the New Era magazine. He pointed out how the Savior was dressed when He appeared to the Nephites:

“They saw a Man descending out of heaven; and he was clothed in a white robe” (3 Ne. 11:8). Here was the Master of Creation! He could have worn anything he desired, but he chose a plain, white robe.
This teaches me an important lesson. Just as we can be too casual in our clothing, we can also be too pompous. The Savior’s presence brought dignity and honor to the situation. He didn’t need to impress anyone by what he wore (“Right for the Climate,” New Era, March 1992).

Today, I will remember the impact that my appearance has on my own behavior and on my ability to influence others.
