After hearing King Benjamin’s words, the people humbled themselves and prayed with all their hearts. As a result, they were filled with the Holy Ghost and their sins were forgiven through the Atonement of Jesus Christ (see Mosiah 4:1-3). You might think the sermon was over at that point, but Benjamin had more to say. He wanted his people not only to become converted but to stay converted. The remainder of his message focuses on maintaining a spiritual conversion over time. It provides valuable guidance for those who have become disciples of Christ and want to endure to the end.
In verses 11 and 12, he first identifies four blessings the people have received as a result of their conversion:
- They have come to a knowledge of the glory of God.
- They have tasted of His love.
- They have received a remission of their sins.
- They have felt great joy in their souls.
He then urges them to do four things, each of which will require sustained effort over time:
- Always retain in remembrance the greatness of God.
- Humble themselves in the depths of humility.
- Call on the name of the Lord daily.
- Stand steadfastly in the faith of that which is to come.
Finally, he promises them four blessings if they will do those things. Notice how the promised blessings each relate to and amplify one of the blessings they have already received:
- They will always rejoice.
- They will be filled with the love of God.
- They will always retain a remission of their sins.
- They will grow in the knowledge of the glory of God.
I can relate to the blessings the people received when they were converted: knowledge, love, forgiveness, and joy. Because I want those blessings to grow in my life over time, I will recommit to follow the four admonitions of Benjamin: remember God, humble myself, pray every day, and be faithful.
