Alma 54 – Moroni and Ammoron Exchange Letters About a Possible Prisoner Swap

Alma 53Alma 55

Both armies have many prisoners, and Ammoron sends word to Moroni that he would like to trade prisoners. Moroni is inclined to do so, but because the Lamanites are the invading army, they have taken many women and children prisoner, while the Nephites have only taken Lamanite soldiers. Moroni proposes the exchange of one Lamanite prisoner for each Nephite family and condemns the Lamanite invasion. Ammoron agrees to the terms but argues that the attack is justified.

Chapter Outline

  1. Ammoron proposes a prisoner swap, and Moroni is inclined to do it (v. 1-3)
  2. Moroni’s letter to Ammoron, laying out the terms of the exchange (v. 4-14)
  3. Ammoron’s letter, with a counteroffer (v. 15-24)

My Takeaways

  1. We must not dilute our commitment to truth. Sincerity and virtue are crucial to our eventual success. Dishonesty and hypocrisy lay a foundation for our eventual defeat.
  2. A birthright is not an entitlement but rather a vision of our potential.
