Alma 49 – Moroni’s Army Repels the Lamanites’ Initial Attack

Alma 48Alma 50

Amalackiah’s army tries to strike Ammonihah, the supposedly weakest city, which they previously conquered in one day. But Moroni has fortified the city so much that they don’t dare to attack it. Instead, they move to the city of Noah, which is even more fortified. The ensuing battle could hardly be more lopsided: More than 1,000 Lamanites die, including all of their chief captains, while none of the Nephites are killed.

Chapter Outline

  1. The Lamanites choose not to attack Ammonihah, because it is so well fortified (v. 1-11)
  2. The Lamanites attack the city of Noah and suffer terrible losses (v. 12-24)
  3. The survivors return to Amalackiah, who is furious. The Nephites, on the other hand, express gratitude to God (v. 25-30)

My Takeaways

  1. Crises become more manageable when we are prepared.
  2. Unselfish motives lead to better outcomes.
  3.  If we develop good spiritual habits, we can enjoy “continual peace.”

When Nephi and his people “had prepared all things,” including “much fruit and meat from the wilderness, and honey in abundance,” and other provisions, they boarded the ship they had built to travel across the ocean (1 Nephi 18:6). In the first section of the Doctrine and Covenants, the Lord speaks of “the calamity which should come upon the inhabitants of the earth,” and He foretells a time when “peace shall be taken from the earth” (Doctrine and Covenants 1:17, 35).
