3 Nephi 7 – The Government Collapses; the People Divide into Tribes

3 Nephi 63 Nephi 8

Since no one can trust the government any more, the people divide into tribes, consisting of families and close friends. Jacob, the king of the secret combination, leads his people to safety in the north.

Meanwhile, Nephi preaches the gospel, performs miracles, and baptizes many people.

Chapter Outline

  1. The people divide into tribes (v. 1-8)
  2. Jacob becomes king of the “secret combination” and leads them to safety in the north countries (v. 9-14)
  3. Nephi performs miracles; many people are converted and baptized (v. 15-26)

My Takeaways

  1. We need to bring people together, to find common ground, and to unify rather than to divide.
  2. Contracting circles of trust impoverish all of us.
  3. Some things that might be more comfortable keeping private take on new meaning and power when we are willing to make them public.

New Testament Parallels

A House Divided

God seeks to bring people together. Satan seeks to divide us, because we are easier to conquer when we’re alone. Jesus taught that a house divided cannot stand. We can follow Him by bringing people together instead of separating them.

“They…Stopped Their Ears”

When Stephen told the Sanhedrin that he saw Jesus standing on the right hand of God, “they cried with a loud voice, and stopped their ears.” It can be difficult to hear messages that require us to change, but if we refuse to listen, we fail to progress.
