After reading two chapters from Isaiah to his brothers, Nephi elaborates on what he has shared. In a future day, God will gather Israel, and the Gentiles will play a significant role in that gathering. He will crush the power of Satan. Those who are righteous will not be afraid even as God’s power is manifest throughout the world.

- Isaiah’s words refer to both temporal and spiritual things (v. 1-3).
- The Gentiles will help gather Israel (v. 4-9).

- God will save His people from the power of Satan (v. 13-19).

- When we are blessed with advantages, we must nourish those who lack them.

- The combined testimony of many people is a powerful witness of the truthfulness of the gospel.

“Temporal and Spiritual” – Mosiah 2:41
Don’t underestimate the value of temporary things. On at least two occasions, Nephi’s brothers, Laman and Lemuel, asked him whether the principles of the gospel related to temporal things or only to spiritual things. They seem to have wanted to keep different parts of their lives separates, with their daily decisions being disconnected with their…
“According to the Flesh” – 2 Nephi 10:2
On at least two occasions, Nephi’s older brothers asked him if the scriptures were talking about spiritual things or about temporal things. Here’s how they asked the question after he read two chapters of Isaiah to them: What meaneth these things which ye have read? Behold, are they to be understood according to things which…

How Much Power Does the Devil Have?
A few weeks ago, I wrote about how to overcome temptation. A friend of mine asked me to consider the following question: How much power does the devil have over us? Does he have any power at all if we choose not to listen to him? It’s a good question, and the Book of Mormon…
What Does the Book of Mormon Teach About the Millennium?
A millennium is a period of a thousand years. The Millennium is a thousand-year period of peace following the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. The apostle John foresaw a time when Satan would be bound for a thousand years. Jesus Christ and His followers would govern the earth during that time (Revelation 20:1-7). Isaiah foresaw…

Who Is the “Prophet” that Moses Promised Would Come?
Moses wanted to prepare the children of Israel to enter the presence of God. He hoped to make them “a kingdom of priests and an holy nation” (Exodus 19:6). But when the people heard the voice of the Lord, they were frightened, and they asked Moses to be their intermediary: he could speak directly with God,…

“Out of Obscurity and Out of Darkness”
Isaiah prophesied that God would do a marvelous work among His children in response to widespread hypocrisy and cynicism. An important element of that work would be a book which would enable people to overcome confusion and see clearly: In that day shall the deaf hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind…
“Cut Off from Among the People”
Relationships are essential for happiness. When Nephi’s brothers trivialized his spiritual experiences, the Lord explained to him that those who keep His commandments will prosper, while those who rebel will be “cut off from the presence of the Lord” (1 Nephi 2:18-21). Later, Nephi quoted a prophecy of Moses to his brothers to emphasize the…

Devouring Fire and Divine Mercy
In a revelation to Joseph Smith, the Lord warned that the “great and abominable church” would be cast down by “devouring fire.” Echoing visions of Ezekiel and Nephi, this fire symbolizes both judgment and mercy—a pleading from God to the wayward. God loves all of His children and He defends those who follow Him.
