Lehi’s Prophecies – 1 Nephi 10:2-14

After describing a spiritual dream to his family and urging two of his sons to repent, Lehi went on to prophesy about a number of future events. Because he had recently obtained the brass plates, which contained the words of many prophets, it’s likely that his awareness of these events was enhanced by his study…

This Redeemer of the World – 1 Nephi 10:5-6

5 And he also spake concerning the prophets, how great a number had testified of these things, concerning this Messiah, of whom he had spoken, or this Redeemer of the world. 6 Wherefore, all mankind were in a lost and in a fallen state, and ever would be save they should rely on this Redeemer.…

All These Things…Were Done As My Father Dwelt in a Tent – 1 Nephi 10:16

16 And all these things, of which I have spoken, were done as my father dwelt in a tent, in the valley of Lemuel. (1 Nephi 10:16) At the beginning of this chapter, Nephi relates a number of doctrines which his father taught after sharing his vision of the tree of life. These teachings included:…

The Own Due Time

Lehi told his family that their people would return to Jerusalem “in the own due time of the Lord.” We are often in a hurry. When we know something needs to happen, we want it to happen now. God knows not only what needs to happen but also when. We can trust His timing.

❖ Nephi Seeks revelation – 1 Nephi 10:17-22

Why Is Firsthand Spiritual Knowledge Important?

After the first prophet in the Book of Mormon, Lehi, described a dream or a vision which he had experienced, one of his sons—Nephi—wanted to have the same experience. He tells us that he wanted “to see, and hear, and know of these things, by the power of the Holy Ghost” (1 Nephi 10:17). Later,…

What Are the Mysteries of God?

A knowledge of the mysteries of God was important to Nephi. He knew that he was “highly favored of the Lord” because he “had a great knowledge of the goodness and the mysteries of God” (1 Nephi 1:1). His first recorded spiritual experience came because he had “great desires to know of the mysteries of…

Joseph, Daniel, and Nephi: Dream-Interpreters

Not all dreams are revelations from God, but some are. Joseph was a dreamer, and he clearly believed that some of his dreams were messages from God. (See Genesis 37:5-11.) Perhaps because of that experience, he was attuned to the dreams of others, and he was able to interpret the cryptic dreams of Pharaoh’s chief…

Seeking the Lord Diligently – 1 Nephi 10:17-19

Moses prophesied that his people would eventually forget the Lord and would be scattered among all nations. But he made a promise about what would happen next: If from thence thou shalt seek the Lord thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul (Deuteronomy 4:29,…

New Testament Parallels

John the Baptist

The prophet Isaiah spoke of a prophet who would prepare the way for the coming of Jesus Christ: The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Isaiah 40:3 After studying the brass plates, which contained the writings of Isaiah, and while living in the wilderness himself,…

What Does the Book of Mormon Teach About the Baptism of Jesus?

In the Bible, the first mention of baptism is in reference to the baptism of Jesus Christ. All four of the Gospel writers tell the story (Matthew 3, Mark 1:1-11, Luke 3:1-22, John 1:19-34). In all four cases, they use the word “baptism” or “baptize” without explanation. They take it for granted that their readers…

Anointed

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; Isaiah 61:1 To anoint is to “smear or rub with oil, typically as part of a religious ceremony,” and is often associated with a person taking on a…

One Eternal Round

After losing the first 116 pages of the Book of Mormon, Joseph Smith was devastated. “All is lost!” he exclaimed to his family. “What shall I do?” (Lucy Mack Smith, History, 1845, page 131). Shortly after, the Lord reassured him that His work would continue to move forward. God emphasized this point by saying that…

Joseph Smith and the Need to Know

Remaining in “darkness and confusion” was simply unacceptable to Joseph Smith. He framed specific questions. He studied the information already available. He prayed carefully. Like Nephi, Alma, and Mormon, he made the effort to seek and receive answers.
