Light and Truth: A Network of Revelatory Relationships

In Doctrine and Covenants 93, the Savior identifies Himself as “the Spirit of Truth” (v. 9, 11, 26) and as “the true light that lighteth every man that cometh into the world” (v. 2; see also John 1:9).

Elder John C. Pingree described truth in terms of its relationship with different individuals, which he called “a network of revelatory relationships”:

  1. “God is the source of eternal truth.”
  2. “The Holy Ghost testifies of all truth.”
  3. “Prophets receive truth from God and share that truth with us.”
  4. “God expects us to seek, recognize, and act on truth.”

(“Eternal Truth,” General Conference, October 2023)

Elder Pingree also warned that Satan actively works to block our reception of truth. As the Savior revealed, “That wicked one cometh and taketh away light and truth, through disobedience, from the children of men, and because of the tradition of their fathers” (Doctrine and Covenants 93:39).

Alma taught his son Shiblon that Jesus’ role as our Savior is inseparable from His identity as the source of light and truth:

There is no other way or means whereby man can be saved, only in and through Christ. Behold, he is the life and the light of the world. Behold, he is the word of truth and righteousness.

Alma 38:9

Today, I will open my heart to receive and act upon truth from God. I will resist Satan’s efforts to keep me from the light, actively learn from prophets, and listen for the voice of the Holy Ghost confirming to me what is true and right.
