Tradition!

Traditions—repeated activities which carry a deeper meaning—can help us instill values in the next generation. However, the Book of Mormon points out that incorrect traditions can inhibit growth, and modern prophets emphasize that traditions alone are insufficient. We should cultivate faith-building traditions which encourage people to open their hearts and receive God's grace.

Girt with Truth

Telling the truth isn’t always easy, but it beats the alternative. Paul taught that honesty is like a belt which holds our spiritual armor in place. God is perfectly truthful, and the Anti-Nephi-Lehies were distinguished by their honesty. Choose to be honest with yourself and others. Gird yourself with truth.

Weeping for Zion

An essential characteristic of a Christlike leader is love for those they serve. God explained that He called Joseph Smith to establish His church because of his "weeping for Zion," praying with diligence and with deep desire for the eternal welfare of others.

Entangled Again

The Articles and Covenants of the Church begin with a personal story. After being forgiven, Joseph Smith was "entangled again in the vanities of the world." He repented and was forgiven again. When we humbly repent, God will set us free, even when our sins seem insurmountable.

Pray Vocally

The Lord instructed Martin Harris, "Pray vocally as well as in thy heart." Elder Jeffrey R. Holland has encouraged us to pray out loud whenever possible, even when we are alone. He said, "I think this process is basic to how God communicates with us and how He intends for us to communicate with Him."

Preface to Four Revelations, April-May 1829

Four revelations received by Joseph Smith on behalf of different people have nearly identical openings. These openings are derived from combinations of biblical passages, all of which appear in some form in the Book of Mormon. Here is how I would paraphrase the message of this recurring introduction: Big things are about to happen, so pay close attention to what I'm about to say: People are ready to hear the gospel and if you work hard, you will find success in sharing it. I will answer your prayers, so ask me for help.

Serious Reflection

Joseph Smith's mother said that he was "given to reflection." His own history confirms that observation. He speaks about pondering, meditating, and engaging in "serious reflection." Thinking deeply about what we have learned can invite more revelation.

It Began with a Question

Many Book of Mormon prophets received knowledge by asking questions in prayer. The Restoration of the gospel began when Joseph Smith asked questions in prayer. Well-formed questions asked in faith can open our hearts and minds to receive revelation.

Moroni’s Collaborative Conclusion

Moroni draws heavily on the writings of his precessors in his concluding remarks. This collaboration with prior prophets enhances the power of his message and helps us to see "how merciful the Lord hath been." in all ages of the world.

“He Began to Remember”

Coriantumr refused to respond to prophetic warnings from Ether for a long time. When he finally saw the wisdom in those warnings, it was too late to avoid the consequences of his unwise decisions. It is so much better to heed warnings and repent early!
