After receiving a remission of their sins and learning how to retain it, King Benjamin’s people made a covenant to obey God for the rest of their lives. King Benjamin told them that, because of this covenant, they had become the children of Christ, and that if they remained faithful to Him, they would receive eternal life.

After the people of King Benjamin received a remission of their sins and entered a covenant with God, he told them that they had become the sons and daughters of Christ: Because of the covenant which ye have made ye shall be called the children of Christ, his sons, and his daughters; for behold, this…

“Take upon You the Name of Christ” – Mosiah 5:8
King Benjamin told his son Mosiah that he had two reasons to call the people together: to declare that Mosiah was now the king, and to give the people “a name that never shall be blotted out, except it be through transgression” (Mosiah 1:12). After the people heard his message about Jesus Christ, they repented…
❖ Be Steadfast – Mosiah 5:11-15
“Blotted Out” – Mosiah 1:12, Mosiah 5:11
King Benjamin told his son Mosiah that he was going to give his people “a name that never shall be blotted out, except it be through transgression” (Mosiah 1:12). When the people gathered, Benjamin shared some things he had learned from an angel. Among the teachings of the angel was the importance of the name…
How Can I Have More Experiences with God?
My question today was inspired by a talk given by President Russell M. Nelson in the most recent general conference. He gave the following advice: Understand that in the absence of experiences with God, one can doubt the existence of God. So, put yourself in a position to begin having experiences with Him. Humble yourself.…
What Does It Mean to Be Steadfast?
After the people of King Benjamin prayed and received a remission of their sins, they made a covenant with God to obey His commandments for the rest of their lives. King Benjamin told them that they were now the children of Christ, and he urged them to follow through consistently on the promises they had…
“That Christ…May Seal You His” – Mosiah 5:15
After urging his people to take upon themselves the name of Christ, informing them that this is the name by which God will call them, and reminding them that they needed to serve Him in order to know Him, King Benjamin ended his final sermon by expressing his hope that the people would be “steadfast…
How Can I “Always Abound in Good Works?”
We are all imperfect. We make mistakes every day, and we all wish we had more knowledge, more skill, and more wisdom. But even in our imperfect state, we are all capable of doing good works. After the people of King Benjamin prayed and received a forgiveness of their sins, Benjamin taught them that they…
Old Testament Foundations
With One Voice
After Moses relayed to his people all of the laws which God had revealed to him on Mount Sinai, they responded “with one voice:” “All the words which the Lord hath said will we do” (Exodus 24:3). Years later, the people of King Benjamin responded to his final sermon with a longer declaration. Once again, we are…
Permanent Promises
How long can you sustain a commitment? This may be one of the great challenges of mortality. Do you promise to do something one day, but change your mind later when you feel differently? Obviously, if you only do what you feel like doing at any given moment, you’re unlikely to accomplish anything of any…
New Testament Parallels
Without the Camp
When sacrifices were performed in ancient Israel, the bodies of the animals were burned “without the camp.” Jesus was similarly crucified outside of the walls of Jerusalem. We must meet Him there: outside of our comfort zone and our usual social circles.
“That They Might Know Thee”
Knowing, loving, and following God are more interconnected than we realize. We come to know Him as we serve Him. We love Him more when we keep His commandments. As our relationship with Him grows, we become more like Him, so that we can see Him as He is.
Church History Connections
Bound
An important characteristic of God is that He is perfectly reliable. As we strive to become more like Him, He gives us opportunities to emulate that characteristic. “I, the Lord, am bound when ye do what I say,” He told a group of church leaders in 1832 (Doctrine and Covenants 82:10). Is His agency limited…
Daughters of Christ
After King Benjamin taught his people about the Atonement of Jesus Christ, they fell to the ground and pleaded with the Lord to forgive their sins. In response, they received an assurance from the Holy Ghost that their sins were remitted, and they were filled with peace and joy (Mosiah 4:2-3). They subsequently turned their…
