Mosiah 19 – Prophecies Fulfilled: King Noah Is Killed, and His People are Conquered

Mosiah 18Mosiah 20

It didn’t take long after the martyrdom of Abinadi for his prophecies to be fulfilled. First, Noah faced an internal rebellion. Then, the Lamanites attacked. When he commanded the men to leave their families behind, some of them initially obeyed, but they ultimately turned against him and put him to death in exactly the way Abinadi had foretold.

Meanwhile, Noah’s son Limhi made an agreement with the Lamanites and began to reign over his people in captivity.

Chapter Outline

  1. Gideon tries to assassinate the king (v. 1-8)
  2. The Lamanites attack. Noah and some men abandon their familes. Those who remain surrender to the Lamanites. (v. 9-15)
  3. Noah is killed and his priests flee (v. 16-24)
  4. Limhi becomes king and makes a treaty with the Lamanites (v. 25-29)

My Takeaways

  1. Follow your conscience when you’re pressured to do something wrong, especially when there is a sense of urgency in the request.
  2. When you do something wrong, have the courage to confess and face the social consequences of what you have done.
  3. There are many ways to contribute, and the most influential person isn’t always the most visible

I was thinking yesterday about the men who obeyed King Noah’s order to abandon their wives and children when the Lamanites attacked (Mosiah 19:11). The decision was instinctive, made under chaotic and confusing circumstances. It was a cowardly decision,…
