Ether 13 – The New Jerusalem; Coriantumr Fights a Man Named Shared

Ether 12Ether 14

Moroni shares a remarkable prophecy of Ether: that a New Jerusalem would be built in this land. His ancestors had arrived on this continent many years before the first Jerusalem was built, so Ether first had to teach his people about the old Jerusalem in order to explain the new one.

Ether saw his people destroying themselves, and he kept a record of their actions. When he tried to preach to them, they tried to kill him, so he hid in the cavity of a rock. Their king, Coriantumr, fought against the armies of a man named Shared, finally killing him and defeating his army. But Coriantumr did not repent.

Chapter Outline

  1. Ether prophesies of the New Jerusalem (v. 1-12)
  2. Ether hides in the cavity of a rock (v. 13-22)
  3. Coriantumr defeats Shared in battle (v. 23-31)

My Takeaways

  2. We can help build the New Jerusalem by promoting unity, holiness, and charity.
  3. It’s important to speak up for what you know is right.

❖ The New Jerusalem – Ether 13:1-12

What Is the New Jerusalem?

Heavenly Father wants His children to have unity, holiness, and charity. The ancient prophet Enoch taught his people about God, and they established a city which exemplified these three attributes: UNITY – “They were of one heart and one mind” HOLINESS – “and dwelt in righteousness” CHARITY – “and there was no poor among them” (Moses…

A New Jerusalem – Ether 13:4-6

4 Behold, Ether saw the days of Christ, and he spake concerning a New Jerusalem upon this land. 5 And he spake also concerning the house of Israel, and the Jerusalem from whence Lehi should come–after it should be destroyed it should be built up again, a holy city unto the Lord; wherefore, it could…

What Does It Mean for Our Garments to Be “Washed White Through the Blood of the Lamb?”

White clothing represents purity and holiness: When Jesus was transfigured in the presence of Peter, James, and John, “his raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller on earth can white them” (Mark 9:3). When He visited the American continent following His death and resurrection, He wore a white robe. As He prayed…

He Should Go and Prophesy – Ether 13:20-22

20 And in the second year the word of the Lord came to Ether, that he should go and prophesy unto Coriantumr that, if he would repent, and all his household, the Lord would give unto him his kingdom and spare the people— 21 Otherwise they should be destroyed, and all his household save it…

Ether’s Courage

Ether was unpopular because of the truths he shared. He had to hide in the cavity of a rock, and even after that, he went back to call the king to repentance. Integrity can be lonely, but we need to stand up for what’s right, even when it’s not popular.

The Remnant Shall Return

Isaiah’s prophecy about the remnant of Israel returning to God assures that no matter how far they are from home, they are not out of God’s sight. Book of Mormon authors echo this sentiment: God is mindful of you, wherever you are, and you can come home.

“A New Heaven and a New Earth” – Ether 13:9

Near the end of the Book of Isaiah, the prophet describes a future time of happiness for the Lord’s covenant people. Speaking on behalf of God, Isaiah expresses surprise that people who had rebelled and rejected God so many times were now seeking after Him and willingly following Him: I am sought of them that asked not for me; I am…

“That They Should Perish Not” – Ether 13:7

When Joseph was sold into slavery by his brothers, he made the best of a bad situation, but he couldn’t have known that his relocation to Egypt would eventually save the lives of his father and the rest of his family. But years later, after rising to a position of authority, when his brothers traveled…

“Build Up Cities”

When the Lord warned Nephi to flee from his brothers, he did not go alone. He took with him everyone who “believed in the warnings and the revelations of God” (1 Nephi 5:5-6). They traveled many days in the wilderness and chose a place to settle, where they constructed buildings, planted crops, and established a new community.…
