3 Nephi 16 – Gathering Israel

3 Nephi 153 Nephi 17

After explaining that the gathered Nephites and Lamanites represent some of His other sheep, Jesus goes on to explain that He has additional sheep in other places whom He must also visit. He tells the people to write about their experiences with Him and prophesies that the Gentiles will read their words and play a pivotal role in the gathering of Israel, which will result in the unity and joy prophesied by Isaiah.

Chapter Outline

  1. I have other sheep who will also hear my voice (v. 1-3)
  2. The role of the Gentiles in the gathering of Israel (v. 4-15)
  3. Isaiah 52:8-10 will be fulfilled (v. 16-20)

My Takeaways

  1. Reach out to people you don’t know well; they are also the Savior’s sheep.
  2. We can all contribute to God’s work if we are willing to believe in Him.
  3. The gospel can help people from different backgrounds learn to “see eye to eye.

Promised Light

After three days of darkness, when the light returned, the mourning of the Nephites and the Lamanites was turned into joy. Some of our “nights” may last weeks or months, but the promise remains: Morning will come; there will be joy.

Old Testament Foundations

All the Gentiles

The gathering of Israel is more than the recovery of the people who were lost. It is the recovery of all of God’s children who want to be found. God is working to gather all His children, and we can help by being welcoming and accepting of all.

“My Covenant”

A covenant is an alliance, a formal relationship, with a promise that the relationship will endure. When David and Jonathan became close friends, “their souls were knit together,” and Jonathan loved David “as his own soul.” As an acknowledgement of that love and as a promise of continued friendship, they made a covenant with each…

How Will the Remnant of Jacob Be Like a Lion Among Sheep?

The prophet Micah, who was a contemporary of Isaiah, wrote about a time when the children of Israel would not be oppressed any more. In a future day, he prophesied, God’s people would be far more powerful than their enemies. In contrast with earlier times, when they were scattered and taken captive, they would be…

New Testament Parallels

Insiders Beware!

There is comfort in being included and valued, but there are dangers in feeling that we are uniquely chosen. God loves all of His children and blesses them in different ways at different times. Wd should celebrate all of those blessings.

Three Covenants

One of the purposes of the Book of Mormon is for us to “know the covenants of the Lord” (Title Page). The Savior emphasized three of those covenants during His visit to the American continent, following His death and resurrection: Israel will be gathered: “Then will I gather them in from the four quarters of the earth;…

“With the Voice Together Shall They Sing”

The Book of Mormon opens with music. In the opening scene, Lehi sees in a vision: God sitting upon his throne, surrounded with numberless concourses of angels in the attitude of singing and praising their God. 1 Nephi 1:8 The prophet Isaiah associated singing with expressions of joy and gratitude. For example: “Sing, O heavens;…

What Is the Fulness of the Gospel?

He said there was a book deposited, written upon gold plates, giving an account of the former inhabitants of this continent, and the source from whence they sprang. He also said that the fulness of the everlasting Gospel was contained in it, as delivered by the Savior to the ancient inhabitants. (Joseph Smith-History 1:34) The…
