2 Nephi 6 – Jacob’s First Sermon, Part 1: Two Gatherings

2 Nephi 52 Nephi 7

In the first section of Jacob’s first sermon, he explains the meaning of a few verses from Isaiah, which his brother Nephi assigned him to discuss. He explains that all those who have been scattered from Jerusalem will be gathered again and that the Messiah will “manifest himself unto them.”

Chapter Outline

  1. Introduction: I am anxious for your welfare (v. 1-4).
  2. The Isaiah passage (Isaiah 49:22-23) (v. 5-7).
  3. The people of Jerusalem will be scattered twice (v. 8-11).
  4. The Messiah will recover them a second time, and the Gentiles will help (v. 12-15).
  5. Three more Isaiah verses: Isaiah 49:24-26) (v. 16-18).

My Takeaways

  1. Good teachers feel genuine love and concern for their students.
  2. God is mindful of us. He gathers us when we are scattered.
  3. Covenants go both directions. Not only have we promised to stand with God, but He has promised to stand with us.

His Holy Order

Jacob said that he had been called and ordained according to God’s holy order. The earliest meaning of “order” is “a body of persons living under a religious discipline.” God’s church provides a community and activities which help us draw closer to Him.

2 Nephi 6:3 I Am Desirous for the Welfare of Your Souls

3 Nevertheless, I speak unto you again; for I am desirous for the welfare of your souls. Yea, mine anxiety is great for you; and ye yourselves know that it ever has been. For I have exhorted you with all diligence; and I have taught you the words of my father; and I have spoken…

Hunters and Fishers

The gathering of Israel is underway, and each of us can be part of it. Jeremiah said, “The days come, saith the Lord, that it shall no more be said, The Lord liveth, that brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt; but, The Lord liveth, that brought up the children of Israel from the land of the north,…

Waiting Upon the Lord

At the end of Isaiah 40, the prophet draws a sharp contrast: The strongest among us will eventually fail. “Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall.” Our strength and our endurance is limited, and we will all face challenges we cannot overcome on our own. But if…

“They Shall Not Be Ashamed That Wait for Me”

Waiting doesn’t come easy for human beings. We aren’t naturally patient. But multiple times, the prophet Isaiah identifies waiting as a key component of discipleship. Here are some examples: After quoting one of those passages, Nephi’s brother Jacob reaffirmed this principle: For the people of the Lord are they who wait for him; for they still wait…
