My Liahona

Like the pointers on the Liahona, the Holy Ghost can point us in the right direction. Like the writing on those pointers, the Holy Ghost can also provide specific messages. The Holy Ghost will guide us according to our faith, diligence and heed.

“Our Constant Companion”

As Nephi entered the city of Jerusalem at night to make a third attempt to obtain the brass plates, he didn't know what he would do. He simply said that he was led by the Spirit. Like Nephi, we need the guiding and comforting influence of the Holy Ghost.

The Fruit of the Spirit

How can we recognize the influence of the Holy Ghost? Paul provides two contrasting lists to help us identify the Spirit of the Lord: "the works of the flesh" vs. "the fruit of the Spirit." These lists can help us invite God's Spirit into our hearts.

“Have Ye Received the Holy Ghost?”

Baptism prepares us to receive the Holy Ghost. The ordinance of confirmation by the laying on of hands is an important part of the process. Ultimately, we must act to receive the gift and invite the Holy Ghost into our lives.

Pricked in Their Heart

The people who heard Peter preach on the day of Pentacost were "pricked in their heart." They were motivated to do better. The Holy Ghost speaks to us many ways, but sometimes He teaches us how we can improve. We can respond with optimism and faith.

“Reprove the World”

The Holy Ghost is a teacher, a reminder, and a comforter. He is also a reprover. Part of teaching us "all things" is teaching us things that are difficult to hear. The Lord is gathering those who are willing to receive and act upon that feedback.

“All Things”

Jesus promised that the Holy Ghost would teach us all things. Nephi and Moroni taught the same. What does that mean? 1. He is omniscient. 2. He can lead us to the next bit of knowledge we need. 3. He can help us in all aspects of our lives on any subject.

Where It Listeth

Nicodemus was tentative and cautious. Jesus taught him that people who are born of the Spirit exercise faith. They don't have to know everything before they are willing to do something. Like Nephi, they embrace uncertainty and move forward.

Baptized with Fire

John the Baptist described the effect of the Holy Ghost with a striking metaphor: I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire. Quiet, but Piercing

As Elijah sat in a cave on Mount Horeb (also known as Mount Sinai), he learned an important lesson about hearing God. Through the mouth of the cave, he witnessed three powerful and destructive natural forces: a "great and strong wind," an earthquake, and a fire. Elijah's observation was that the Lord was not in...
