Wickedness

The Book of Mormon teaches several principles which can help us navigate environments where people are making wrong choices. 1. We are all wicked. 2. Wickedness is not binary. 3. Wickedness need not be permanent. 4. As we become less wicked, God can entrust us with more responsibilities.

Hearken and Search

To hearken is to listen attentively, intending to act on what you hear. To search is to proactively seek understanding. In the preface to the Doctrine and Covenants, the Lord invites us to do both. Good disciples are good listeners and good seekers.

Lists of Sins

Three times in 3 and 4 Nephi, we find lists of sins, which represent the many sins we abandon as we approach Jesus. When we do so, He will purify us, fill us with power, and include us in a community of believers.

…And Such Were Some of You

God invites sinners to turn to Him, so that He can help them overcome their sins. We don't have to repent before we can exercise faith in Him. We exercise faith in Him so that He can help us to repent!

All the Gentiles

The gathering of Israel is more than the recovery of the people who were lost. It is the recovery of all of God's children who want to be found. God is working to gather all His children, and we can help by being welcoming and accepting of all.

I also wrote that we must open our eyes to recognize the many ways God is healing... Continue Reading →

Instead of letting the issue fester, Abram said to Lot, "Let there be no strife, I pray... Continue Reading →

How to “Come unto Christ”

Draw near unto me and I will draw near unto you; seek me diligently and ye shall find me.Doctrine and Covenants 88:63 The phrase "come unto Christ" only appears three times in the Book of Mormon. Jacob tells us that he labored diligently to persuade his people to come unto Christ (Jacob 1:7). Amaleki ends the small plates of Nephi with... Continue Reading →
