Ruth's pledge to Naomi has parallels in the Book of Mormon. Like Nephi, she swears an oath referencing both God and her own life. Like Alma's people, she accepts a new relationship with God and with a covenant community. Like King Benjamin's people, she commits to it for the rest of her life.
Jephthah
Jephthah and Amalickiah both made rash promises, and both paid a tragic price. Jephthah lost his daughter; Amalickiah lost his life. No wonder the Savior would later counsel His disciples on both continents, "Swear not at all; ... but let your communication be Yea, yea; Nay, nay, for whatsoever cometh of more than these is evil."
Be Strong and of a Good Courage
Moses charged Joshua to "be strong and of a good courage" when he called him to lead Israel. Nephi gave the same charge to his brothers as they worked to obtain the brass plates. We can also be strong and courageous as we fulfill difficult assignments from God.
“He Lived Great”
John Taylor wrote that Joseph Smith "lived great" and that he "lived for glory." Jesus promised to help us live "more abundantly," and Nephi affirmed that he and his people "lived after the manner of happiness." With the Savior's help, we can intentionally engage in activities which bring long-term satisfaction and fulfillment.
Overcoming Analysis Paralysis with Faith
Nephi entered Jerusalem "not knowing beforehand the things which [he] should do." In a series of 1831 revelations, the Lord encouraged this mindset: Act on what you know you should do, and more instructions will follow. You will receive more knowledge after you act in faith.
