Jacob decried the burgeoning inequality among his people by reminding them that all people share a common origin, value, and purpose. This reasoning echoed Nephi’s earlier rejection of claims to preeminence and his insistence that because God created all humanity, He remembers and speaks to all nations.
The Heaven and the Earth
Faith in God can begin with a sense of wonder at His creations. Nephi, Benjamin, Ammon and Aaron, Jesus, and Moroni all emphasized the Creation as a basis for belief in God.
Your Most Holy Places
Nephi, the brother of Jared, and Moses all climbed mountains to speak with God. Joseph Smith entered a grove of trees for the same purpose. We build temples to give us similar spaces, where our prayers may be more easily answered and where we can draw closer to God and be changed by Him.
Still and Small
God has all power and controls the elements, but Elijah, Nephi, and Joseph Smith all testified that God spoke to them through a still small voice. What distractions can we remove from our lives in order to hear that voice and receive God's most powerful messages?
Esteeming Your Brother as Yourself
The Lord commands us to esteem others as ourselves. Book of Mormon prophets teach this principle and warn us against placing ourselves above others. Peer relationships may generate unhealthy competition, but when we see one another through God's eyes, we can overcome this temptation and recognize the infinite worth of each of His children.
How to Recognize the Holy Ghost
God taught Oliver Cowdery four principles about personal revelation which can help us recognize messages from God: 1. Messages from God enlighten us. 2. Messages from God dispel fear and build faith. 3. God speaks to both our mind and our heart. 4. The Spirit of God confirms positive choices with positive feelings.
“I Will Provide Means”
The Lord assured Joseph Smith that He would provide means to help Joseph accomplish his assignment. Two months later, as Joseph translated 1 Nephi, he saw the same promise in nearly identical words. God's assignments always come with sufficient resources.
Of God / Of the Devil
How do we respond to other people's spiritual experiences? A trusted leader told Joseph Smith that his first vision was "of the devil." In contrast, his father told him his vision of the angel Moroni was "of God." The Spirit can help us avoid defensiveness and recognize truth.
Bountifully
The word "bounty" refers to a generous gift. Amulek reminded the Zoramites that the gospel had been taught to them "bountifully." We can be grateful for the countless blessings God has bestowed and continues to bestow bountifully on His children.
Hearing Hard Truths
Noah and his priests were angry with Abinadi and labeled him as "mad." We use a variety of strategies to avoid accepting difficult messages. We attack the messenger, we respond emotionally, or we look for allies. In the end, it's better to actually listen
