Jesus prayed for His disciples to be one. Enoch and his people achieved that state of unity. We can do so as well by aligning our hearts more closely with Christ, loving one another as He loves us, and working together toward common causes.
Finding Opportunities to “Be One”
Unity is essential to discipleship. Alma taught that having “hearts knit together in unity and in love” made his people “the children of God." The Savior said, “Be one; and if ye are not one, ye are not mine." Elder Buckner urged us to look for opportunities to be one instead of reasons to divide.
“Divided into Classes”
The people who interacted with Jesus "had all things common among them." However, a few generations later, "they began to be divided into classes." We each need to overcome attitudes and behaviors which create or perpetuate divisions among people.
After the Holy Order of God
Alma and his sons preached "after the holy order of God." This conveys a sense of joint action, of collective effort. Jesus wants His disciples to be one because some needful things can only be accomplished through organized, collective effort.
The Book of Mormon and the Bible: Growing Together and Establishing Peace
Lehi taught that the Bible and the Book of Mormon would "grow together" and establish peace. By recognizing the unity of God's word to different people in different cultures, we learn to build strong relationships based on universal principles.
Knit Together
Paul wanted church members in Colossae to have interconnected lives, so that they could comfort one another and learn the gospel together. Alma wanted the same for his people. Both of them expressed this unity in the same way: "hearts knit together."
“The Middle Wall of Partition”
The Atonement of Jesus Christ not only breaks down barriers between us and God, it also breaks down barriers between people. Paul said that Jesus "hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us." He can help us become unified.
With One Accord
The phrase "with one accord" appears 11 times in the book of Acts. It means to be united by a common purpose. As we strive to follow the Savior and to prepare for His return, we can find unity in our shared goals and desires.
“That They May Also Be One”
Unity is very important to Jesus. At the Last Supper, He urged His apostles to be one. In His visit to the American continent, He made the same plea. His living representatives on the earth have also urged us to overcome contention and become one.
A House Divided
God seeks to bring people together. Satan seeks to divide us, because we are easier to conquer when we're alone. Jesus taught that a house divided cannot stand. We can follow Him by bringing people together instead of separating them.
