Lehi saw a vision in two stages: one as he prayed outdoors beside a rock, and one as he lay in bed afterward in his home. Richard G. Scott and Neill F. Marriott both taught that we can invite revelation with the simple question, "Is there more?"
Testimony of Jesus = Spirit of Prophecy
An angel told John that the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. The only way we can be sure that Jesus is our Savior is by direct, personal revelation from God. Therefore, the people who have that testimony are the people who receive revelation.
Gathering All Things in One
Paul said that God would not only reveal truths to us but that He would ultimately "gather together in one all things in Christ" (Ephesians 1:10). Recognizing connections between gospel truths gives us perspective and helps us simplify our discipleship.
Unspeakable
Some things we learn from God are unspeakable because we are not permitted to share them. Others are unspeakable because we are unable to share them. Through the "unspeakable gift of the Holy Ghost," we can each learn directly from God.
Family Revelation
Raising children is too hard to do alone and requires more knowledge than any parents have. Like Joseph and Mary or Lehi and Sariah, we can receive revelation from God about how to lead our families "in love and righteousness."
Anna, the Prophetess
Anna received a spiritual witness that Jesus was the Messiah, and she shared that testimony with others. Lamoni's wife did the same. Those who obtain and share a testimony of Jesus are prophets and prophetesses.
Being Good Ground
In the parable of the sower, Jesus describes four kinds of ground which a seed might experience: The way side (the road) Stony places, with very little soil Thorny places Good ground (See Matthew 13:3-8.) The first three are not conducive to growth. Only the fourth enables the seed to flourish. Alma uses a similar... Continue Reading →
Dreams and Visions
The prophet Joel foretold a time when people of all ages and economic statuses would receive revelation in abundance: I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my... Writing on the Wall
God communicates with us in many ways. King Nebuchadnezzar received messages in dreams. (See Daniel 2, Daniel 4.) His son Belshazzar received a more dramatic message in a way that he could not ignore. As he hosted a drunken feast and disrespectfully drank from the cups which had been used for sacred ordinances in the... Continue Reading →
Joseph, Daniel, and Nephi: Dream-Interpreters
Not all dreams are revelations from God, but some are. Joseph was a dreamer, and he clearly believed that some of his dreams were messages from God. (See Genesis 37:5-11.) Perhaps because of that experience, he was attuned to the dreams of others, and he was able to interpret the cryptic dreams of Pharaoh's chief... Continue Reading →
