1. God calls imperfect people to do His work. 2. We need to prepare for difficult days ahead. 3. The church and the Book of Mormon are here to help us prepare. 4. God has no tolerance for sin, but He forgives everyone who repents.
The Restoration Proclamation: “The Promised Restoration Goes Forward” (December 30-January 5)
1. God loves all His children. 2. Jesus is our Savior. 3. Joseph Smith saw the Father and the Son. 4. He received priesthood authority. 5. The Book of Mormon teaches eternal truths. 6. The Church of Jesus Christ was restored. 7. The heavens are open.
Christmas: “He Shall Come into the World to Redeem His People” (December 23-29)
The birth of Jesus Christ was highlighted by Nephi, Benjamin, Alma, and Samuel. When Jesus was born, the Nephites and Lamanites experienced a night filled with light. Here are some lessons I've learned as I've studied the Book of Mormon at Christmastime.
Moroni 10: “Come unto Christ, and Be Perfected in Him” (December 16-22)
1. God provides wisdom and knowledge. 2. His past kindness is evidence of His love. 3. We should seek spiritual gifts from Him. 4. He can improve our communication. 5. Holiness requires letting some things go. 6. Christ's power comes when we turn to Him.
Moroni 7-9: “May Christ Lift Thee Up” (December 9-15)
1. The gospel is about embracing good, not just rejecting evil. 2. Charity never faileth. 3. Parents need to be mindful of their children. 4. Different people respond to different teaching approaches, so keep adapting. 5. Jesus Christ can lift us up.
Moroni 1-6: “To Keep Them in the Right Way” (December 2-8)
1. Some things are more important than life. 2. Priesthood authority is given by the laying on of hands. 3. Priesthood brings order into our lives. 4. Sacrament prayers consist of a petition, a purpose, and promises. 5. Church members support one another.
Ether 12-15: “By Faith All Things Are Fulfilled” (November 25 – December 1)
1. Overcome feelings of inadequacy by remembering that God's grace is sufficient for us. 2. God shows us our weakness to help us improve. 3. Hope is both a characteristic and an outcome of faith. 4. We can help build the New Jerusalem by promoting unity.
Ether 6-11: “That Evil May Be Done Away” (November 18-24)
1. Chasing worldly power leads to instability and unhappiness. 2. Righteousness means doing what's right without being asked. 3. Sustainable leadership is built on love, respect, and honesty. Leaders should serve unselfishly and defend the vulnerable.
Ether 1-5: “Rend That Veil of Unbelief” (November 11-17)
1. Coming unto Christ is an incremental process. 2. God uses prayer as a tool to help us grow. 3. Knowedge provides a foundation for belief. 4. It takes effort to remove a veil of unbelief. 5. Our testimony can be based on multiple types of evidence.
Mormon 7-9: “I Speak unto You as If Ye Were Present” (November 4-10)
1. Jesus is risen. 2. We must use our spiritual knowledge in order to receive more. 3. People are more important than things. 4. God can perform miracles in your life. 5. The Savior redeemed us, which means that He brings us back into the presence of God.
