Not to Destroy, but to Build Up

The Savior told Joseph Smith that the Book of Mormon and the church are intended to build up what people already have, not to destroy it. As we interact with others, we must be careful not to disparage or minimize the good things they bring to the table, but to build upon them.

Christ’s New Testament Church

During His mortal ministry, Jesus selected twelve disciples, whom He called apostles, to lead His church. They ensured that His doctrine was taught accurately, and they administered ordinances like baptism. The Savior has reestablished that church today.

Meeting Together Oft

Jesus instructed church members to meet together oft. Moroni explained that church members followed that practice. They seemed less concerned about the logistics of those meetings and more about strengthening relationships through frequent interactions.

The Prosperity of the Church

How can you tell when the church is doing well? Its members are growing closer to the Savior and therefore experiencing increased joy and becoming more holy. Other people want to be part of it. Growth in numbers is matched by individual spiritual growth.

The Waters of Mormon

The waters of Mormon were a beautiful place for those who "came to the knowledge of their Redeemer" there. We can all be grateful for sacred places, including our church buildings, where we have been able to grow closer to God.

Songs, Sermons, Lessons, and Prayers

Moroni and Paul both explained that church services ought to include a variety of content provided by a variety of people. As we share what we have to contribute and learn from others, under the guidance of the Spirit, we are all edified.

Room in the Inn

In contrast with the inn which turned away Mary and Joseph, the wounded traveler in the parable of the Good Samaritan was welcomed into a place of comfort and healing. The Savior invites us to make His Inn (the Church) a welcoming place for wounded and weary travelers.

Roots Deeply Planted

How did Esther find the strength to risk her life on behalf of her people? She found it partly by broadening her perspective, remembering that God had given her specific missions to perform. Mordecai reminded her that she was in a unique position to help: "Who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as... Continue Reading →

Preparing My Heart

Samuel spoke to the Israelites before a significant battle against the Philistines. "Prepare your hearts unto the Lord," he said, "and he will deliver you" (1 Samuel 7:3). When King David's people donated materials to build a temple, he asked God to help them remember that day and "prepare their heart unto thee" (1 Chronicles... Continue Reading →
