The Savior’s Sermon to the Inhabitants of the American Continent

Following His death and resurrection in Israel, Jesus Christ visited a group of people on the American continent. He healed their sick, organized His church, and taught them the gospel. Over a two-day period, He preached a sermon which included the Sermon on the Mount and a discussion of several Old Testament prophecies regarding the gathering of Israel in the latter days. Following is an outline of this sermon:

  1. The Sermon on the Mount (3 Nephi 12-14, Matthew 5-7)
    1. How disciples of Christ should behave (3 Nephi 12, Matthew 5)
      1. The Beatitudes: Blessings associated with Christlike attributes including meekness, purity, and peacemaking (3 Nephi 12:1-12)
      2. Jesus’s disciples are to have a positive influence on others. (3 Nephi 12:13-16)
      3. The fulfillment of the law: higher standards of conduct associated with established laws and customs (3 Nephi 12:17-47)
      4. Perfection is the ultimate goal. (3 Nephi 12:48)
    2. Focus on heavenly rewards (3 Nephi 13, Matthew 8)
      1. Give to the poor, pray, and fast for the right reasons. The Lord’s Prayer is given as an example of an appropriate prayer. (3 Nephi 13:1-18)
      2. Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. (3 Nephi 13:19-24)
      3. Don’t worry about earthly necessities like food, drink, or clothing, and don’t obsess about the future. (3 Nephi 13:25-34)
    3. Learn to discern between good and evil. (3 Nephi 14, Matthew 7)
      1. Don’t judge other people unrighteously. (3 Nephi 14:1-5)
      2. Don’t give sacred things to people who won’t appreciate them. (3 Nephi 14:6)
      3. Ask God for blessings, knowing that He will answer you. (3 Nephi 14:-11)
      4. The Golden Rule (3 Nephi 14:12)
      5. Remember that the path to eternal life is narrow. (3 Nephi 14:13-14)
      6. Beware of people who seem to be good but are really evil. Observe their fruits. (3 Nephi 14:15-20)
      7. It’s what you do, not just what you say, that matters in the end. (3 Nephi 14:21-23)
      8. Build your life on a solid foundation. (3 Nephi 14:24-27)
    4. The law is fulfilled, not destroyed. I am the law.(3 Nephi 15:1-10)
    5. You are the other sheep I spoke of in Jerusalem. I have additional sheep as well, whom I will visit. In the end, there will be one fold. (3 Nephi 15:11-24, 16:1-3)
    6. Prophecies regarding the gathering of Israel (3 Nephi 16:4-20, 3 Nephi 20-22)
      1. Relationship of the Gentiles to the gospel in a future time (3 Nephi 16:4:20)
        1. In the future, the gospel will come to Israel from the Gentiles. (3 Nephi 16:4-9)
        2. If the Gentiles sin against that gospel, God will remember His covenant with Israel. (3 Nephi 16:10-16)
        3. Isaiah 52:8-10 – All will be unified when Zion is established again. We will all recognize God’s hand in these events. (3 Nephi 16:17-20)
      2. We can contribute to the gathering of Israel. (3 Nephi 20)
        1. When the words of Isaiah begin to be fulfilled, God is beginning to fulfill His covenant with Israel. (3 Nephi 20:10-14)
        2. Discussion of Micah 5:8-9 and Micah 4:12-13 – If the Gentiles don’t repent, the house of Israel will become more powerful than them. (3 Nephi 20:15-20)
        3. I will establish Israel (including a New Jerusalem) on this continent, and I will be among you. (3 Nephi 20:21-22)
        4. You are the children of the prophets (including Moses). You are the children of the covenant (including the covenant I made with Abraham). (3 Nephi 20:23-29)
        5. Discussion of Isaiah 52 (3 Nephi 20:30-46)
          1. Verses 8-10 – When the fulness of the gospel is preached, Israel will be gathered. (3 Nephi 20:30-35)
          2. Verses 1-3 – Jerusalem will be redeemed. (3 Nephi 20:36-38)
          3. Verse 7 – God’s people will know Him. (3 Nephi 20:39-40)
          4. Verses 11-15 – God’s servant will be harmed but will nevertheless do a great work which will benefit many nations. (3 Nephi 20:41-46)
        6. How to recognize the fulfillment of these prophecies (3 Nephi 21)
          1. When these words come to you, God has already started fulfilling His covenant. (3 Nephi 21:1-7)
          2. God will do amazing things. His servant will preach the gospel, will be harmed by the world, but will be healed by God. (3 Nephi 21:8-10
          3. Those who reject the gospel will be separated from the people of the covenant, as prophesied in Micah 5:8-15. (3 Nephi 21:11-21).
          4. But if they do repent, the Gentiles will enter into the covenant and work with Israel to establish the New Jerusalem. (3 Nephi 21:22-25)
          5. The work of the Father will commence among all nations. (3 Nephi 21:26-28)
          6. The people will not need to hurry or be anxious, because God will be with them, as prophesied in Isaiah 52:12. (3 Nephi 21:29)
        7. Isaiah 54 – After much affliction, Israel will have peace and prosperity. (3 Nephi 22)
