“The Will of My Father”

A defining characteristic of the Savior’s life was His commitment to fulfill His Father’s will. “I can of mine own self do nothing,” He told a group of religious leaders. “I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me” (John 5:30). Later, speaking to some people who had eaten miraculously-provided bread and fish, He said “I am the bread of life…. I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me” (John 6:38).

After His death and resurrection, when He descended from heaven at the temple in Bountiful, He emphasized that characteristic as part of His introduction:

I have drunk out of that bitter cup which the Father hath given me, and have glorified the Father in taking upon me the sins of the world, in the which I have suffered the will of the Father in all things from the beginning.

3 Nephi 11:11

And when He subsequently explained to His disciples the meaning of the gospel, He began with His own subservience to His Father:

This is the gospel which I have given unto you—that I came into the world to do the will of my Father, because my Father sent me.

3 Nephi 27:13

Elder Denelson Silva encouraged us to follow the example of the Savior, in fulfilling God’s will even when it is inconvenient or challenging: “During His ministry, He likewise faced difficulty, including criticism, persecution, and ultimately the bitter cup of His atoning sacrifice. Yet in all circumstances He sought to do the will of His Father and give glory to Him” (“Courage to Proclaim the Truth,” General Conference, October 2022).

Today, I will recommit to follow the example of the Savior by fulfilling the will of the Father. I will recognize that a great sense of fulfillment and joy comes from acting in accordance with divine priorities.
