There are lots of good people in this world. That’s one message I get from Joseph F. Smith’s Vision of the Redemption of the Dead.
Although the question which prompted this revelation was a logistical one—how could the Savior preach to so many disobedient spirits during the brief period between His death and His resurrection—another theme which weighed on President Smith’s mind was the small number of people who had been receptive to the Savior’s message during His mortal ministry:
Notwithstanding his mighty works, and miracles, and proclamation of the truth, in great power and authority, there were but few who hearkened to his voice, and rejoiced in his presence, and received salvation at his hands.
Doctrine and Covenants 138:26
In contrast, what he saw in the vision was “an innumerable company of the spirits of the just, who had been faithful in the testimony of Jesus while they lived in mortality” (Doctrine and Covenants 138:12).
Surely this scene is related to the “innumerable company of angels” whose companionship we will enjoy if we are faithful, according to the apostle Paul (Hebrews 12:22). Surely it is related to the “numberless concourses of angels” seen by the prophet Lehi and by Alma ((1 Nephi 1:8, Alma 36:22).
Joseph F. Smith listed a number of individuals whom he recognized within this “vast multitude,” including biblical characters, Book of Mormon prophets, and modern church leaders (Doctrine and Covenants 138:18, 38-53). The multitude was impressive not just because of its size but because of the extraordinary individuals who were part of it.
Today I will remember that there are many good people on this earth and many more good people who have lived on this earth. Although it might feel lonely at times to make good decisions, we are not alone, and our righteous desires place us in very good company.
