Doctrine and Covenants 106-108: “To Have the Heavens Opened” (September 20-26)

Detail from “Melchizedek Blesses Abram” by Walter Rane

King David prophesied that God would confirm Jesus Christ’s authority with these words: “Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek” (Psalm 110:4).

Melchizedek was the king of Salem during Abraham’s life. He blessed Abraham, and Abraham paid tithing to him. (See Genesis 14:18-20.)

Alma later explained to the people of Ammonihah that Melchizedek had established peace in the land by his faith and by the power of the priesthood. “There were many before him, and also there were many afterwards, but none were greater” (Alma 13:14-18).

In 1835, Joseph Smith received a revelation in which the Lord explained that before the time of Melchizedek, His power and authority had been called, “the Holy Priesthood, after the Order of the Son of God.” But after that time, because Melchizedek “was such a great high priest,” and to avoid casual repetition of the name of God, it became known in the church as the Melchizedek Priesthood. (See Doctrine and Covenants 107:1-4.)

Joseph Smith also learned in this revelation that the Melchizedek Priesthood provides access to “all the spiritual blessings of the church” (Doctrine and Covenants 107:18). President Russell M. Nelson clarified that this power is available to men and women who make sacred covenants with God:

Because the Melchizedek Priesthood has been restored, both covenant-keeping women and men have access to “all the spiritual blessings of the church” or, we might say, to all the spiritual treasures the Lord has for His children.

Every woman and every man who makes covenants with God and keeps those covenants, and who participates worthily in priesthood ordinances, has direct access to the power of God.

Spiritual Treasures,” General Conference, October 2019

He specifically urged the women of the church to study section 107 of the Doctrine in Covenants in order to better understand how to access God’s power.

Here are a few of the principles taught in this revelation, with some relevant blog posts:

Duty

In the poem “The Theologian’s Tale; the Legend Beautiful,” Henry Wadsworth Longfellow relates a story of a monk who experiences a supernal vision in which he sees the Savior. During this experience, he hears the poor outside the gate of the convent, and he wonders whether he dares to leave the divine presence in order…

“All These Things” – 3 Nephi 13:33

In the Sermon on the Mount, the Savior teaches a critical time-management principle using examples from nature: Birds find food without a lot of advance planning. Flowers look magnificent without focusing excessively on their own appearance. If God feeds and clothes them, then why do we dedicate so much time and energy to things outside…

Be a Light

Jesus said, “Ye are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14). To His disciples on the American continent, He phrased it as an imperative: “I give unto you to be the light of this people” (3 Nephi 12:14). God had previously given a similar message to the prophet Isaiah: I will also give thee for…

“I Have Not Spoken in Secret”

Isaiah emphasized to his people that the Lord had communicated very clearly what they needed to know. “I have not spoken in secret,” he said; “from the beginning, from the time that it was declared have I spoken; and the Lord God, and his Spirit, hath sent me” (Isaiah 48:16, 1 Nephi 20:16). Nephi added his own…

“After the Order of His Son”

Alma taught that God ordains priests to operate “after the order of his Son, in a manner that thereby the people might know in what manner to look forward to his Son for redemption” (Alma 13:1-2, 7). In other words, when we exercise the authority of the priesthood, we turn people toward the Savior. The…

“Strengthen Thy Brethren”

At the Last Supper, Jesus warned Peter that Satan would try to destroy the faith of the apostles. “But I have prayed for thee,” He said, “that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren” (Luke 22:32). Peter might have thought that the warning was to prevent him from succumbing to…
