As I’ve pondered 2 Nephi 2 today, I’ve had the following insights about how to make good decisions:
- Start by reframing your circumstances as opportunities instead of obstacles. Lehi told Jacob that God would consecrate his afflictions for his gain (2 Nephi 2:2) and that the Fall of Adam and Eve made happiness possible (2 Nephi 2:22-25).
- Then, recognize that knowledge is essential to effective decision-making. Do your research. Learn from reliable sources. Make sure that you are “instructed sufficiently” to understand the choice (2 Nephi 2:5).
- Recognize that the Savior is “full of grace and truth,” and that He can not only help you make a smart decision but can help you make that decision work (2 Nephi 2:6).
- Think about the consequences of your choices. Some decisions lead to happiness, and others lead to misery. Think about where this decision will lead? How are things likely to play out? (2 Nephi 2:13-16)
- Be proactive. God created us to act for ourselves, not to be acted upon (2 Nephi 2:14, 16).
- Remember that God wants us to have joy. Because of the Atonement of Jesus Christ, we have the option to choose “liberty and eternal life” (2 Nephi 2:27). Following His guidance will lead to happiness.
- Pay attention to advice from people who love you and who have no hidden agenda (2 Nephi 2:30).
Today, I will strive to apply these principles in my own decision-making. I will strive to frame my decisions with hope, to gather all essential information, to think about the consequences of my actions, to seek advice from people who I can trust, and to follow the guidance I receive from God.
Just what I needed. I’m stuck today with how God based my thoughts, decisions and actions need to be.
And, left to my own will and way, I’m relying on myself instead of him to guide my next step.
Thank you
