The People…Were Exceedingly Rejoiced – Alma 45:1

1 Behold, now it came to pass that the people of Nephi were exceedingly rejoiced, because the Lord had again delivered them out of the hands of their enemies; therefore they gave thanks unto the Lord their God; yea, and they did fast much and pray much, and they did worship God with exceedingly great joy.

24 But they grew proud, being lifted up in their hearts, because of their exceedingly great riches; therefore they grew rich in their own eyes, and would not give heed to their words, to walk uprightly before God.

(Alma 45:24)

When we receive blessings, we can respond in one of two ways, as illustrated by the first and the last verses in Alma chapter 45:
  1. We can recognize the source of our blessings and be grateful to God. As Mormon describes in the first passage above, this attitude will lead us to worship Him, to fast and pray, and to be joyful.
  2. We can attribute the blessings to our own ability or effort. As Mormon explains in the second passage, this attitude will lead us to ignore or reject the servants of the Lord, to disobey His commandments, and to be proud.
Today, I will follow the example of the people in the first passage. I will thank my Heavenly Father for the many wonderful blessings I have received from Him. I will pray to Him and worship Him. I will choose to rejoice.
