4 Wherefore, whoso believeth in God might with surety hope for a better world, yea, even a place at the right hand of God, which hope cometh of faith, maketh an anchor to the souls of men, which would make them sure and steadfast, always abounding in good works, being led to glorify God.
How does hope serve as an anchor to our souls? We know that we should be “steadfast and immovable, always abounding in good works” (
Mosiah 5:15). In other words, we need to be consistent and reliable in keeping the commandments and in pursuing worthy goals. But daily life has a habit of throwing us curveballs and trying to knock us off course. Things can seem worse than they really are, sometimes much worse, and we can easily become discouraged if we aren’t careful.
Hope reminds us not to give up. Hope teaches us that God will bless our righteous efforts and that we can trust Him to help us through any challenge we might face. In the words of Howard W. Hunter:
Yes, we all have difficult moments, individually and collectively, but even in the most severe of times…, those problems…were never intended to do anything but bless the righteous and help those who are less righteous move toward repentance. God loves us, and the scriptures tell us he “gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
“For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.” (John 3:16–17) (“An Anchor to the Souls of Men,” Ensign, October 1993).
Today, I will be hopeful. I will avoid becoming discouraged when things don’t go as I had hoped and will continue to work steadily toward fulfilling righteous goals.
